Rotorua, located on North Island’s volcanic plateau, is the ancestral home of the Te Arawa people who settled in the area more than 600 years ago. Today, Rotorua has retained a strong Maori cultural heritage and provides visitors with the opportunity to discover the Maori culture, myths and legends of the region. Maori cultural performances and a traditional hangi (meal cooked in an underground oven) are highlights of any visit. Additionally, due to its location on the Pacific ‘Rim of Fire’, Rotorua has lively geothermal activity and is surrounded by bubbling mud pools, geysers and mineral lakes
