Queenstown’s majestic beauty, surrounded by mountains & rivers sits on the shore of crystal clear Lake Wakatipu . Here, among the dramatic alpine ranges; it’s rumoured that gold prospectors gave this town its name.

Its cosmopolitan dining and arts scene, its fine vineyards, and the diverse range of bars make evenings as fun-filled as the days.

Shaped like a lightning bolt, Lake Wakatipu is NZ’s third-largest lake. It reaches a depth of 379m, meaning the lake bed actually sits below sea level. Five rivers flow into it but only one (the Kawarau) flows out, making it prone to sometimes dramatic floods.

Queenstown has four distinctive seasons. Winter brings crisp, blue-sky days, spring retains the snow but blooms into longer, warmer days, summer offers sunshine and long twilights, and autumn a burst of brilliant red and gold.

At the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu is rural Glenorchy and Paradise Valley. From here it’s a short drive into the Mt Aspiring National Park and the start of some of New Zealand’s great walks.
